AirAsia X will suspend its Kuala Lumpur-Nairobi route from September 1, citing lower-than-expected travel demand for Kenya.

Affected passengers with travel bookings on this route from September 1 onwards have been notified and offered alternatives.

These include a full refund, a credit account or a one-time, free-of-charge flight change for travel before August 31. Passengers who booked through third-party travel agents are advised to contact their agents directly for assistance.

AirAsia X owners Capital A Berhad is switching its attention from Africa to Saudi Arabia with the introduction of  new routes to Riyadh and Dammam, while increasing flight frequencies to Jeddah from Kuala Lumpur.

The group is also eyeing new connections from Bangkok and Jakarta to Riyadh.

CEO of Capital A Tony Fernandes said, “I am absolutely blown away by what’s happening in Saudi Arabia—the cultural shift, the transformation in people’s lives, and the sheer scale of ambition is truly mind-blowing.

“We believe the new Riyadh route is projected to serve close to one million two-way passengers by 2026 and more than seven million by 2030, reflecting strong demand for increased connectivity between Asean and the Gulf region.”
