Winter is here. And the Chinese city of Chongqing is becoming an increasingly popular destination for seasonal travel. Known for its snowy mountain resorts and hot springs, Chongqing has successfully capitalised on the growing winter tourism trend in China, attracting visitors seeking unique experiences during the colder months.
Winter travel has seen a notable rise in popularity, with a surge in demand for snow-related activities. According to Tongcheng Travel, searches for snow-related experiences have tripled, while Ctrip reports a 50% weekly increase in searches for skiing since November. The China Tourism Academy projects that 2024-2025’s snow season could attract over 520 million visitors to ice and snow destinations, contributing significant revenue to the tourism sector.
Chongqing has set itself apart by offering diverse winter experiences beyond traditional winter sports. The city has introduced over 150 cultural and tourism events this winter, including the Jinfo Mountain Ice and Snow Season and the Tongliang Dragon Lantern Art Festival. In Fuling District, the Meixin Red Wine Town has launched a Winter Homestay Festival, inviting influencers and tourists to stay in themed hotels, further driving interest.
Hot springs and wellness retreats are also gaining traction, with searches for domestic hot spring travel increasing by 178%. Chongqing’s milder climate is attracting visitors seeking relaxation and extended stays, catering to the growing "snowbird" trend of longer winter vacations.
