Emirates is scrapping flights between Melbourne and Singapore in the face of stiff competition on the route.

The service that carries passengers on both the Dubai-Singapore and Singapore-Melbourne legs will end on Sunday 30 March next year.

“Affected customers holding bookings on Emirates’ Singapore-Melbourne route will be offered alternative travel arrangements or a full refund, the Gulf carrier said.

In terminating the route, Emirates said the Singapore-Melbourne corridor now sees as many as 10 flights per day shared between Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Scoot, Jetstar and - most recently - Turkish Airlines, which has a Singapore stopover on flights between Melbourne and Istanbul.

Emirates will replace the Melbourne-Singapore service with an extra Melbourne-Dubai direct flight.
