Hong Kong has a golden opportunity to enhance its standing as one of the world’s most authentic destinations, but the city will need to look beyond shopping to drive demand from international visitors, a leading Hong Kong hotelier has suggested

Aron Harilela, CEO and chairman of Harilela Hotels Limited and founder of The Hari Hong Kong and its sister property The Hari London, says Hong Kong’s luxury scene is evolving from being solely a retail destination to one that “emphasises unique experiences”.

“To attract international travellers, we should focus our marketing efforts on the diverse attractions Hong Kong has to offer – beyond shopping. Highlighting cultural events, local cuisine, and stunning natural landscapes can help reinvigorate our appeal as a vibrant cultural hub.”

Aron Harilela says efforts should be made to highlight local stories, celebrate people and showcase traditional foods.

Harilela says Hong Kong has a wealth of authenticity, from its diverse culinary landscape to its rich cultural heritage.

“However, there’s always room for improvement in how we promote these unique aspects. Efforts should be made to highlight local stories, celebrate the people behind our businesses, and showcase traditional foods.

“Collaborative initiatives between hotels, local artisans, and culinary experts can enhance the visibility of what makes Hong Kong special, ensuring that travellers leave with a deeper appreciation of the city’s identity.”

Both Hari properties in Hong Kong and London have a strong emphasis on art and community engagement, responding to a hospitality trend among travellers, Harilela says.

“Today’s hotel guests seek more than just a place to stay; they desire immersive experiences that connect them with the local culture.

“The modern Hong Kong hotel guest is more discerning, looking for personalised services and unique offerings that resonate with their values.”

The Hari actively nurtures artistic talent through initiatives like The Hari Art Prize, aimed at elevating local artists and integrating art into the mainstream.

Additionally, The Hari Chronicles - an ongoing series of conversations about art, design and local culture, further enriches the community narrative.

“This commitment not only enhances the guest experience but also fosters a vibrant community around the art,” Harilela says.

The Hari Hong Kong last year launched an audio walking guide that explores beneath the surface of one of Hong Kong’s oldest and most diverse districts, Wan Chai.

Part of The Hari’s ‘Live Like a Local’ experience, the  ‘The Hari Neighbourhood Guide Audio Tour’ app features an interactive map and narrations of seven of the district’s hidden gems, all located a short walk from the urban hotel on Wan Chai’s Lockhart Road.
