Travellers heading for Europe in the next few months can expect some
congestion as sports fans head for the Euro 2024 soccer tournament in
Germany and the Olympic Games in Paris.
Travel data provider OAG has been taking a close look at the travel
logistics for Euro 2024 and says this year’s event will see more
reliance on trains than planes.
German domestic air capacity has been cut by 48% since the summer of
2019, with Easyjet and Ryanair both dropping all domestic flights.
Fortunately, trains in Germany are fast, frequent and comfortable and
Deutsche Bahn has always been a leader in promoting regional access
through train services.
The on-time performance of trains is also better than planes in
Germany, says OAG, which tracked last month’s OTP results in Germany:
The best airport for OTP is Stuttgart with 88.9% on-time performance.
The worst airport for OTP is Munich at 59.3% - “so just keep those
levels in mind if you’re travelling to the tournament”, OAG warned.
And for those fortunate enough to have a ticket for the Euro 2024 Berlin final their latest OTP rates are 71.6% for April 2024.
