If you like your entertainment big and brawny, the Sumo Hall Hirakuza show in Osaka is offering a large dose of Japanese culture.
The show is expected to gain new devotees during Expo 2025 in Osaka during which it will promote the 1,500-year-old Japanese tradition “with modern entertainment elements” designed specifically for inbound tourists.
“We aim to offer visitors a deep appreciation of sumo’s appeal through an engaging entertainment experience. Since our opening last year, we have welcomed guests from 90 countries and regions, and we feel that the appeal of sumo is spreading around the world," a spokesperson said.
Sumo entertainment shows are conducted entirely in English and features performances by former professional sumo wrestlers.
The programme incorporates educational elements, including explanations of sumo’s history, techniques and rules.
Guests can also engage in interactive experiences such as a sumo challenge against a wrestler.
"Sumo is more than just a sport; it is a symbol of Japanese culture. While preserving and respecting its traditions, we integrate modern entertainment elements to create an experience that is enjoyable for all audiences," the spokesperson added.
Additionally, show guests can try traditional Japanese cuisine, including a classic sumo dish, chanko nabe (sumo hotpot).
