The much-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has partially opened its doors ahead of its full launch on 3 July 2025.
Located near the newly inaugurated Sphinx International Airport and offering breathtaking views of the Giza Pyramids, GEM is poised to become both the world’s largest archaeological museum and the largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation.
Spanning nearly 500,000 sqm and built at an estimated cost exceeding US$1 billion, the museum will eventually house over 100,000 artifacts – many of which will be on public display for the first time.
During its soft opening, visitors can explore 12 galleries including the Grand Hall, the Grand Staircase, and the commercial zone. The museum’s exhibitions chronicle Egypt’s long and layered history from prehistoric times to the Roman period, with themes centered on society, kingship, and belief systems.
The grand opening in July will feature the unveiling of the complete Tutankhamun collection – comprising over 5,000 priceless artifacts – as well as the debut of the Khufu solar boat, carefully transported and preserved for its new home.
