As we approach 2025, the travel landscape is undergoing a dynamic transformation. While our Readers’ Choice Award feature celebrates Asia’s best in travel, it’s also a great opportunity to see what the region’s leaders are predicting for the coming year.

Here’s what I’m excited about – and watching closely – as the industry shapes up for the future:

A hot China and its viral cities

China is undeniably one of the hottest destinations in 2024, according to travel agents across the region. Once thought of as a destination for older travellers and group tours, China is now captivating young travellers with its vibrant cities, stunning landscapes, and unique cultural experiences. Social media platforms, from TikTok and Instagram to Xiaohongshu, have been buzzing with excitement and travel experiences in China. Chongqing, for example gained huge fame online as a tourism hotspot, winning travellers’ hearts with its three-dimensional mountain cityscape, stunning night views, and fiery cuisine.

Move over FOMO, it’s time for JOMO

In an always-on, hyperconnected world, more people will be seeking out wellness experiences, not just traditional spa or wellness retreats, but opportunities to temporarily switch off and embrace the joy of missing out (JOMO). Take my recent trip to Tawaravadee Resort, a retreat two hours from Bangkok, the simple pleasure of lake views, forest bathing and the crunch of leaves underfoot work wonders to reset my mental state.

Families come first for multi-gen travel

With people living longer and having more disposable income, intergenerational travel is likely to remain hot in 2025 as people seek quality family time. Cruise lines are already tapping into this segment in Asia while ravel agents will be in a sweet spot to help time-starved parents to navigate the complexities of multi-gen travel.

The new wave of cruising

The cruise sector has been tipped to enjoy further success next year following a strong 2024. As young travelers chart a new course, Millennials and Gen Z are taking to the high seas and rivers. Not only that, seasoned cruise travellers are looking to venture into experiential itineraries and destinations.

Pawsome, pet-friendly travel

With birthrates on the declined for many developed economies in Asia, pet ownership rates have boomed for millennials and Gen Zs, a growing number of these ‘pawrents’ are keen to include their furry companions in their travel plans and seek out pet-friendly accommodation and experiences.
