Singapore Airlines will be the first international carrier to fly
into the new curfew-free Western Sydney Airport (WSI) when it opens in
late 2026.
The airport lies 44km west of the Sydney CBD and 41km west of Sydney
Kingsford Smith Airport. It will have an initial capacity to handle 10
million passengers per year with a single terminal and runway.
Currently, Singapore Airlines operates five daily flights between
Sydney and Singapore, but has to negotiate the 11pm-6am curfew period of
Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport.
Singapore Airlines regional vice president South West Pacific, Louis
Arul, said,“This is a unique opportunity to work with a greenfield
airport to set a new base line for customer experience throughout an
airport ecosystem.”
The greenfields airport will be installing the latest technology that
allows aircraft to be turned around quickly, and a next-generation
baggage system.
Vietnam Airlines and Turkish Airlines are believed to be in talks to
operate from WSI, along with Australia’s two main domestic carriers,
Qantas and Virgin Australia.
