Saudi Arabia is pushing ahead with its ambition to become one of the world’s most popular cruise hubs, as state-owned Cruise Saudi is focusing on destination experiences and developing its own cruise line.

Aroya is a 335-metre floating resort with a capacity for more than 3,000 guests. The ship, originally deployed in China, has been given a US$355 million make-over specifically for the Arabian market.

“The completely natural island is roughly 220 miles north of Jeddah,” chief executive Lars Clasen told Gulf News. “It will have a small jetty. The cruise ship will be at anchor outside, and then there will be a welcome centre, a dining area, cabanas, beach sunbeds, etc. It is for cruise passengers to get out and relax.”

Saudi Arabia has three ports operational, Jeddah and Yanbu and Dammam, and is targeting the development of another seven across the kingdom.

Cruise Saudi is also pushing ahead with its joint venture with Aman Resorts’ luxury 100-guest ship, which is due for launch in the first half of 2027.
