Minecraft fans can now explore the New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes virtually, thanks to a world-first downloadable content (DLC) collaboration between Tourism New Zealand, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Mojang Studios.
Standing for Downloadable Content, a DLC is an additional content for a video game that players can download to add new features, levels, or locations. In this case, players can download a virtual version of New Zealand’s iconic spots and explore them within the game.
With over 300 million copies sold worldwide, Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time. “This innovative approach to destination marketing offers millions of Minecraft fans the unique opportunity to virtually explore and create in a range of iconic New Zealand locations,” said Tourism New Zealand chief executive René de Monchy.
The DLC not only showcases New Zealand’s natural beauty but also highlights the country’s thriving film industry, game development scene, and rich Māori culture. “The project creatively combines technology, gaming, culture, New Zealand’s otherworldly places, Māori culture, and people to present New Zealand to the vast Minecraft universe in an innovative way,” de Monchy explained.
Led by Māori game designer Whetu Paitai, Piki Studios worked alongside Tourism New Zealand to create an authentic and exciting virtual experience. Paitai said, “Developing the first-ever Minecraft game for a destination, especially New Zealand, feels immensely rewarding.”
Available for free on the Minecraft Marketplace from 19 March, the DLC offers players the chance to discover New Zealand like never before. It launches just in time for A Minecraft Movie, which was shot in New Zealand with support from the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate (NZSPR).
