Italy’s national carrier, ITA Airways, has received approval to begin its integration into the Star Alliance network. The decision, made by the Star Alliance Chief Executive Board, marks a key step in the airline’s growth following its induction into the Lufthansa Group earlier this year.
Set to become a full member of the world’s largest airline alliance in early 2026, ITA Airways will add 360 daily flights to the network, bolstering Star Alliance’s presence in Europe, particularly from Rome and Milan. The airline's integration will provide more connected travel options for passengers worldwide.
For travel agents, this means enhanced booking opportunities, increased flexibility for multi-leg international journeys, and access to a broader network of destinations. Travellers will benefit from smoother transfers, potential loyalty programme perks, and more seamless travel across 192 countries.
Theo Panagiotoulias, CEO of Star Alliance, expressed confidence in ITA Airways' ability to enhance the global network, while ITA’s CEO, Joerg Eberhart, highlighted the airline’s excitement at bringing "Made in Italy" excellence to the alliance.
As part of its integration, ITA Airways will be mentored by Lufthansa Group, which is guiding the airline through the process. Dieter Vranckx, Lufthansa Group's Chief Commercial Officer, spoke of the positive impact ITA Airways will have on Star Alliance customers, offering new travel opportunities and enhancing personalised travel planning.
Once ITA Airways officially joins in 2026, Star Alliance will consist of 26 member airlines, operating over 18,000 daily flights to 192 countries.
